The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that Cane (Daniel Goddard) is on the verge of losing everything he’s worked for. But, as viewers know he only has himself to blame. The lies he’s told to Lily (Christel Khalil) and Victoria (Amelia Heinle) will cost him his family and career.
Cane, Cane, Cane, why did you lie to your wife? Telling Lily that nothing happened in Tokyo, Japan, was dumb. He could have told his wife exactly what happened, in detail. Doing so would have put him in a much better position now and in the near future.
Cane, Cane, Cane, why did you lie to your boss? Withholding the full hotel room story puts Vickie and Brash and Sassy in a bad position. Add to that what was done to Billy (Jason Thompson) in Los Angeles and you’re sure to be unmasked as a saboteur. Once the full story comes out Vickie will have no reason to trust you and thus, like Juliet (Laur Allen) you’ll be gone.
SORAS’d twins Mattie (Lexie Stevenson) and Charlie (Noah Alexander Gerry) will be devastated when their seemingly protected worlds are shattered by your cowardly actions. Their lives weren’t on your mind when you behaved like a frat boy in Japan. And you didn’t care about their mother’s modeling gig, or your own career when you purposely set Billy up in California.
Y&R has clearly injected rogue blood into Cane’s veins. In this scribe’s opinion as joined by various fan’s voices via social media, Goddard hadn’t been offered meaty scripts during the past few years. He was limited to reaction shots that played off Lily’s indiscretion with Joe (Scott Elrod) awhile ago, sparing matches with Hilary (Mishael Morgan) and whining to and about Billy and Victoria.
At one time Cane was an intriguing character. Some of the best work in Goddard’s Y&R tenure came during the period when Cane faked his death. Goddard evidenced deep and believable emotion when Lily beat cancer as well.
It’s risky for soap writing staffs to purposely damage a likeable character. How the descent plays out is obviously important. But a general restoration plan must also be in order before the character crush happens.
Basically, Cane has slowly slipped overboard. His knee surgery jump-started events last year. That was followed by his night with Juliet and the left coast setup of Billy.
Cane’s alcohol induced behavior, followed by the coverup of the Tokyo incident is plausible. His plot to destroy Billy in LA, followed by the rationalization of doing so, uh, those plot points feel out of character.
As with all things soap, fans can be forgiving. So, regardless of where Cane’s at right now, all will be generally accepted as long as Y&R creates a fitting climax to this arc and then allows his redemption to unfold organically.
