The disappearance of Claire Hayes has the detectives looking into a senator. They couldn’t bring the senator in officially. He was merely overseen arguing with Claire who works at the hotel he lives in. It was still a disappearance and so they couldn’t force him to talk to them. Especially not after he recognized Detective Lena Silver from a previous case. She got snappy at him. He knew he could walk away and there be no consequences. He was right too. The cops couldn’t touch him until they found Claire’s body.

Claire’s remains were found in a suitcase dumped in the park. Sean and Jonah were the cops that found it. They were arresting Eddie C who was a notorious pickpocket when they noticed an unattended bag. They called it in. They even advised that the bag appeared to be bleeding. Claire hadn’t been dead for long. Lena and Danny got called in to identify the body. They knew with one look it was her and Lena just knew that Senator Lowell killed her. He’s done it before. Its why he recognized her.

During Lena’s early days as a detective, she caught a murder of a young sex worker. The senator was connected and she had to jump through so many hoops just to get warrants that he ended up cleaning the crime scene by time she returned. The evidence was gone. The senator got away. Lena doubted herself for years afterwards. Her own sister said that Senator Lowell was her white whale. The one that got away. It’s why Lena was so meticulous about building cases nowadays. She never makes a move that can’t be backed up by evidence.

Yet, this case had touched a nerve. It was now Danny reminding her to cross her t’s and dot her i’s. He was sounding like her because she’s rubbed off on him and she said it worked both ways. He was rubbing off on her too. Lena wanted to catch the senator this time. She was prepared to do anything to make it happen. They found security footage of someone matching the senator’s build and height dragged the suitcase into the park. It came from the direction of the hotel. Lena felt for sure that proved the senator did this.

Danny had to reel her back in a bit. It wasn’t credible evidence. It was circumstantial at best. They didn’t have a crime scene and while it may looked suspicious that she was moved the same night they spoke to the senator – it still wasn’t enough. The detectives went back to the hotel. They dug through everything. They found out that Claire was great to work with. The staff even mentioned that Senator Lowell was a taskmaster. He wanted everything to be exactly as he described or he yelled.

There didn’t seem to be a boyfriend in the picture for Claire. Only the senator has been ordering meals for two since his stay. His wife was practically living separately from him. He even ordered a romantic dinner specially designed for couples. He definitely had a mistress. It just wasn’t Claire. Claire was focused on her career. She worked at the hotel because she was aiming to become a photojournalist one day. She had heard that the man that took down the Russian mob was staying at the hotel. She wanted to get a photo of him.

It would have been her big break. The man she was stalking also couldn’t have killed her. He was under constant police surveillance as well as wearing an ankle monitor. He never left his room on the night of the murder. He has an airtight alibi. The senator does not. Lena was getting frustrated with Danny always tell her to think things through and he said he stayed because he believes in her. Together they found Claire’s camera. They proved she was taking photos of someone else when she accidentally took photos of the senator with his mistress.

There was no need for him to lose it on her after that or kill her. He probably could’ve survived the cheating scandal. Then again the cover up was often worse than the crime. He killed someone and they proved he did it by working diligently. He was no facing life in prison. Lena caught her white whale. The others didn’t take a day off either. Sarah and Grandpa worked together to bring down a girlfriend beater. He was beating on the sister of a cop and the cop threatened him. She got in trouble but then so did he when he later pulled a gun on his girlfriend. He got arrested.

Luckily, the cop didn’t lose her job over this.

Eddie C also came through for Jonah and Sean. He helped them bring down a drug supplier working in the park. They went back there for him and he finally helped more than he harmed. And there was a moment where Mae considered losing her morals to take down a political rival only she couldn’t go through with it because she knew his new friends would do the dirty work for her.
