Audrey found Bode’s pills. She knew he lied about getting rid of him. She even counted them and found one pill missing. Bode tried to make her the bad guy. He called her a “narc”. He kept saying that Richards was looking for an excuse to get rid of him, but the truth is that he gave that man the reason to bounce him. It wasn’t Audrey’s fault. It wasn’t Manny’s fault either. Manny gave Bode a rapid drug test. It came back negative. He was clean. He just wasn’t truthful. He told Manny that he wasn’t planning using the drugs and Audrey knew for a fact that he came close at least once. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be a missing pill.

Bode was an addict. He tried to push his demons down. He tried to be a better man. Then his father died. His father died and he tried to fill his shoes. He had to watch as Richards came in instead to fill them. Richards who wanted to tear down Vince’s legacy to build something stronger. He wasn’t the bad guy that Bode thought he was. He was a rule follower. He firmly believes that following the rules wouldn’t lead to so many mistakes or deaths. He lost his own mentor on the job and so did everyone else at 42 when Vince died.

Richards was there to build them back up stronger than before. The only way he felt he could best do so was without Bode. Bode goes off to do his own thing. He’s always done. He did it back as a prisoner firefighter at Three Rock too. He was a risk taker and its one of the reasons Vince is dead. Richards could see that. He found out about the drugs because Sharon told him about it. Manny had told her and Sharon realized that Richards had a point. Maybe it was too risky for Bode to remain in the field.

Richards wanted to put him in work-ordered rehab. It was a protocol he had to follow before he could bounce him and so Manny spoke up for Bode. He saw Bode will be his responsibility. He made a deal with Richards before the test results. Bode being clean made the deal. Richards put Manny in charge that day. He skipped Jake. It was Manny’s day as IC also known as captain in charge. Manny made several calls that Jake disagreed with because Jake’s ambition was clouding his judgement on this one.

Manny’s first instinct was to get Bode help when he heard about the drugs. Jake’s first instinct was if this would get him the Battalion Chief job. He had talked to Richards after the last call and Richards said outright that he would promote anyone who got rid of Bode. Manny stood in the way of that. Manny being in charge meant he used everyone on the next call. They got called out to a farm. The wife was climbing up the silo when the ladder gave way halfway up. They first had to rescue her before they could rescue her husband.

Her husband had fallen into the silo. The grain was acting like quicksand. Bode and Audrey got sent in. They did their best to stabilize him. Only his lungs were compressed for too long. They couldn’t wait to be lifted by air. Manny went with Jake’s idea of cutting out holes into the silo to release the grain. It freed Gary in time. He was saved and reunited with his wife. He even apologized to her for fighting earlier about bringing in a professional to do the job. He was now going to listen. And Bode promised them they wouldn’t lose their year’s harvest.

The firefighters put the grain in sacs for the couple. They didn’t lose their harvest or their livelihood. Manny made a lot of right calls that day and Richards noticed. Manny also talked to Bode again. Bode finally started telling the truth. He held onto the pills as an escape hatch. He took one and spat it back out. He copped to everything. He finally saw Audrey’s point of view. He was lying and hiding drugs. It was just like his worst days. He confessed everything to Manny because he thought Manny deserved better than vouching for him.

Only Manny didn’t see it that way. Manny saw it as understanding Bode best. He told Richards about the conversation and he continued to back up Bode. It made Richards realize that he found the perfect person to be the new Battalion Chief. He was going to name Manny over Jake. Manny made sure to break it to Jake himself and he asked him not to use the appointment as a reason to leave. Jake makes 42. Richards didn’t. Its why he changed his mind about his Battalion Chief. Richards wasn’t a bad guy.

He later talked to Sharon. The mentor he lost was his wife. He knew Sharon’s pain. He also knew that the ATF investigation into the Zabel Ridge Fire had yielded certain results. He told Sharon that the feds believe the fire was set intentionally. Richards was worried about Bode’s response once he found out so he told Sharon to brace for impact. Bode’s day was just not going well. Audrey broke up with him. She was transferring over to 58. Her sobriety was also tested when she got a hold of those pills and she didn’t want them to sink together. They both needed to get through staying clean for now.

If they each got better as well as stronger, the door was open for them getting back together. Eve and Jake also talked. They thought they should share the note with Bode. They all decided to protect Sharon no matter what. They just didn’t known from whom. It could be Renee or it could be someone else named “R”.

And Eve became committed to getting Three Rock back up and running after seeing her crew working at another prisoner fire camp in the area.
