There was a patient that came into the hospital needing help. She needed surgery. Yet, the doctors were holding off on providing her one because she looked ten even as she claimed she’s thirty. The hospital’s lawyer wanted to speak with the woman’s parents. They were in Maine. It’s where they live. She was in Pittsburgh because she is an adult. She was traveling across country by herself. It’s just that no one believes her. She didn’t have her ID on her because she was t-boned in a car accident and the EMTs got her out of the car without it.
The patient’s name is Maxine Bowers. Or Max as she prefers. Max has a condition that stopped her ageing at ten. She was always small for her age and then at ten she just stopped growing. Max has been through it all. She doesn’t want to deal with it again. She just wanted to get treatment and be on her way. Max was done feeling like a sideshow. She asked for the best doctor available and Mary called in Watson. He took one look at her mouth. She has all of her molars. Her teeth have been in there for decades. She really was thirty. She just looks ten.
Max has such a potty mouth. She has a reason to be that way. It reminds her of her age. She can’t live alone and so she lives with her parents. She has to work a remote job because no one wants to hire her when they get a good look at her. She was taking this road trip because she wanted to go swimming where her mom took her one and only vacation. There was just one issue. She needed more than one surgery. She needed treatment for Lymphoma. Mary found swollen lymph nodes in Max and Max knew about it.
Max didn’t care. She has no reason to live. She will never date or get married or have kids. She grew up in rural Maine. She couldn’t wait to swim in the lake like her mother did and then she didn’t care what happened afterwards. She felt she had no reason to live. She was going to get the surgery to fix her arm and then she’s back on the road. Watson had until the next morning to solve two problems. He has to give Max a reason to live and he has to get Max to accept treatment for lymphoma. Only it wasn’t lymphoma as it happens.
Max was anemic. She’s been coming in for treatment for the past eight months. She was complaining about hand tremors and she’s had a high fever that she couldn’t shake. She didn’t have cancer. She had Lupus. They wanted to tell Max that and Max had already checked herself out of the hospital. Against the doctor’s advice. Max spoke to Shinwell and she doesn’t think there’s anyone else like her. Watson believes there is. He said there’s eight billion people in the world. There’s bound to be someone like Max. Her condition doesn’t even have a name yet.
Watson downloaded the police scanner app on his phone. He stayed up listening to it. Max didn’t have money or her bag or a cell phone or her car. Watson was worried about what she might do and he had a right to that fear because Max tried to steal a car. The cops arrested her. They called in children Services. Watson has some friends on the police force. He was going to get Max released when she started to struggle to breathe. They called an ambulance for her. Max didn’t want to get taken back to the hospital.
She thought she was dying. She wanted to just die there. Under the stars. Watson had to do a lot of fast talking to convince her to keep fighting. It was Ingrid’s idea. Ingrid pointed out that there was fight in Max. Max was traveling around the country by herself. She advocates for herself. She was a fighter and she just needed to be reminded of it. That’s what Watson did for her. Ingrid being back was awkward at first because they weren’t sure if they could trust her again. Ingrid herself wasn’t sure if she could be trustworthy.
Ingrid attends group therapy twice a week. There was a new attending meetings. He seemed a little too invested in Ingrid. He actually stopped by the clinic to “check it out”. He heard such good things from her about it. She ended up telling him that the clinic wasn’t a place to just drop by. The visitors have to call ahead. They would still get a no, but a call ahead showed manners. The guy was still interested. He said he was starting a tech company and he was interested in possibly working with her. She turned that down too. She didn’t think wise to go into business with another sociopath.
Plus, if he kept taking her no’s as a soft one then she was going to threaten him. She said she’s killed before and she wasn’t afraid to do so again. Ingrid and the others gave Max about her future. It was going to be a bright future because Watson did follow through on his promise. He met someone else with the same condition. The woman looks eleven when really she’s forty-one. What Max needed was a community. Her mom died. The ashes were in the back of her car. Its why she to see the lake so badly. She wanted to honor her mother before what she thought was cancer killed her.
Luckily, she’s not dying. Her condition is manageable. She now has a friend and she wasn’t so alone. It was a good day’s work for the team and they all got the chance to talk to Ingrid. Ingrid knew Stephens was battling depression. He dismissed it by trying to laugh it off and Ingrid reminded him that it was a serious condition. He shouldn’t be using sex in leeway of actual therapy. Ingrid also got along with Sasha again. They both missed their friendship.
And Watson has made it known that he does wish to meet his girlfriend’s son – just in case she was wondering.
THE END
