In tonight’s Chicago Fire episode, Van Meter was back on his feet. Guess it’s true you can never keep a good man down because he wants to return to work. He was investigating a few cases before his coma and he didn’t want to leave it to just anybody. He asked for Severide to assist him. They could work the case together.
It gives Van Meter the option of seeing it through and it gave Severide the chance of helping a friend. It was a possible arson case because someone might have mistaken a transfuser for a drain when they poured out oil. It was up to them to determine who the culprit was and if this was a mistake or a malicious action.
Severide loves arson investigations. He can never turn down a mystery. Kidd didn’t need them as much as he did because her days were constantly full. She and her crew took a call about a repairman dangling from a billboard. They had to cut the power that might be electrocuting him.
Then Vasquez had to safeguard him and slowly lower him onto the ladder. It was a simple case. The guy that was injured was actually pretty lucky. He wasn’t electrocuted. He wasn’t badly harmed. He was still sent to the hospital for them to check him out.
Well, the billboard he fell from belonged to a man known as Uncle Larry. His real name is Larry Langer. He was an injury lawyer. The one people always accused of chasing ambulances.
Uncle Larry owned the billboard as well as the land it belonged on. His commercials were cheesy, but it couldn’t be good that he was asking around the Chicago Fire Department to see which rig took the call to the man injured on his lot. The CFD warned Kidd. She warned the others. They were all pretty concerned that they were about to get sued so that Uncle Larry could cover his butt.
Vasquez was one of the few not worried because he was concerned about Sam Carver. Carver was visiting Chicago. He called Violet ahead of time to tell her about it and she was both giddy and worried.
She didn’t know how to react. They didn’t say goodbye on a sour note. It was merely bittersweet. They realized they loved each other much too late to genuinely be together. He took a job in Denver. She stayed in Chicago. They both tried to move on with their lives and neither of them dated anyone else in the meantime.
Violet has a flirtation going with Vasquez. She doesn’t think they have a thing. It’s beginning to look like Vasquez does because he openly flirted with her in front of Carver and Carver picked up on it.
He tried to shut that down right away. He was in Chicago because his new team heard about the program that Violet was running. They were looking to bring it to Denver. Carver was in Chicago to see if it was doable. What he didn’t count on was Vasquez. He got jealous about Vasquez’s friendship with Violet and it was just Violet who didn’t pick up on it.
Romance aside, Severide learned something. He learned that the case Van Meter gave him was already close. It was closed from before Van Meter got injured and so Van Meter’s signature was on the report. He simply didn’t remember it. He wasn’t as back as he led Severide to believe. Severide tried to counsel him.
He tried to get him to see a neurologist and Van Meter refused in a prideful way that demanded no following up questions. He pushed Severide away. He told him that he wasn’t family when they both knew he was.
Van Meter wasn’t ready to accept the help he needed. Severide soon talked about it with his wife. He wanted to know how he could support his friend and Kidd told him to just be there when Van Meter calls. Severide also helped out Herrmann. Herrmann got in touch with Uncle Larry. Larry wasn’t a bad guy.
He was a lawyer that did his job properly. He wasn’t suing CFD. He wanted the report to see what happened on his property when the man was injured because the guy has already lawyered up. Uncle Larry feared he was about to get sued.
It was Herrmann who delivered the official report that it was the victim’s error that resulted in the accident. Uncle Larry was in the clear. He got to talking to Herrmann and they discussed the house fire. It was the oven that burned down his family’s home. Herrmann needed a good lawyer. He got that with Uncle Larry.
He just needed the official report of the fire at his house and that’s where Severide comes in. Severide got him the file. They were going to see what they could do about it. Normally, Herrmann wouldn’t sue. He wasn’t the type.
Only Herrmann’s best friend was at Firehouse 40 now. He doesn’t have anyone to gripe to. Mouch was doing well over there and Herrmann ended up confiding in Uncle Larry.
It worked out for him. He still needed his buddy. Mouch still stops by Molly’s. He stopped by the end of shift that day when they learned that Herrmann was given a payout by the manufacturer and it was enough to pay for them to rebuild their family home on the old lot. He was going to rebuild. Mouch also revealed he secretly hates it at 40. He was thinking about retiring when Herrmann talked him out of it.
Herrmann said there was light at the end of the tunnel, they just had to believe.
Carver eventually town again. It was heartbreaking for both him and Violet. Before he left, he warned Vasquez that Violet has been through a lot and she didn’t need someone with a chip on his shoulder. Vasquez chose to ignore that advice. He continued his flirtation with Violet. He also made his move tonight.
He told her that he was nothing like Carver. It was a reassurance she needed to take a chance again. They kissed. He drove her home only it might not have ended there.
Severide also talked Van Meter into going private while he recuperates. This would allow him to still work cases for the CFD and he would have access to their system to know which cases were closed.
It was a great idea that allowed Van Meter to maintain his pride. Van Meter felt bad about yelling at him and now they were acting like nothing ever happened. It worked out for the both of them.
THE END!
