In tonight’s Chicago Med episode, Dr. Lenox and Dr. Ripley are still going at it. They’ve made agreements in the past to stop whatever this is. They’ve never defined it.
They just don’t know how to end it. They keep coming back together. Lenox pretends it was only physical and the truth is she shared a bond with Ripley. He was the first to see her death wish in action. He came after her when she tried to help a patient. He was a friend. A very good one that she might lose if she doesn’t stop toying with him. Ripley was vulnerable.
He was coming off of a breakup. Two of them, actually. He broke up with Sadie because she could see he wasn’t in love with her. He broke up with Dr. Asher because he loved her too much and he pushed her away to protect her from himself. Yet, what he has with Lenox was unlike anything else.
She’s been on his radar. She’s taken him to task. She’s been there to push him when he needed it and he needed it. They still snap at each other at work. They argued over the case before it ended up with both of them in his car.
Ripley wasn’t in the best of moods lately. It was the anniversary of Sully’s death. It’s been a whole year already. He grabbed drinks with Sully’s widow and they discussed how to spread his ashes. Ripley took the day off to do it. Lenox remained at the hospital when a friend of Dr. Charles’s came in.
Her name is Suzie Mankiewicz. She wasn’t feeling alright and her husband brought her in to get checked out. Howie was Charles’s old roommate at medical school. Suzie was once Charles’s girlfriend.
There was no bad blood. They were all friends now. They were such good friends that Charles could see that Suzie was happy about retirement and that Howie was dreading it.
He didn’t want to retire. He was only doing it to please his wife. He also didn’t want advice about telling his wife the truth. Charles was thrice divorced. Howie wasn’t going to take him up on what to do about his own marriage. He made a choice. He chose Suzie. Which made what happened next so much harder. Suzie had blood vessels clumped together in a knot in her brain.
There were two options. One was surgery. Suzie could remove the knot, but it came with risks. There was over a seventy percent chance of mortality. The second option would be to treat it with medication as Suzie slowly dies from this. The non-surgical option would give her two to five years.
Suzie listened to the doctors about both choices and she chose surgery. She didn’t want a physical as well as cognitive decline for the last few years of her life. She wanted to enjoy her retirement. She wanted to spend more time with Howie. It was Howie that was against surgery.
Howie thought surgery was too much of a risk. He thought Suzie was being selfish by choosing surgery and he wanted his friend to talk her out of it. They were all psychiatrists. Dr. Charles wasn’t going to let Howie convince himself that it selfish to not want to decline. He watched Cece slowly die.
He didn’t want to put Howie through that and neither did Suzie. It’s why she chose surgery. She thought it best for him to deal with the quick pain of her death over seeing her waste away. Howie came to see that Suzie wanted to live. And she wanted to do it so that she could be with him.
The story of how Suzie and Howie got together wasn’t bad. Howie fell for her right away. Suzie could tell and Howie never acted on those feelings until after Suzie broke up with Charles. Charles struggled with intimacy. He kept people at arms’ length. Suzie chose to be with someone she knew could fully love her back.
Lenox got the whole tea. When Suzie and Howie told Charles they were engaged, he jumped up in excitement for them. He hit the ceiling fan that was still on and he was bleeding from the head. He just refused to go to the ED because he didn’t want to make their night about him.
Suzie’s words before surgery were to Charles. She asked him to take care of Howie for her if she doesn’t survive. The hospital was full of patients struggling. Dr. Archer met a bull rider who needed back surgery. He also had to give up bull riding because his back couldn’t take another fall. The guy refused surgery.
He said bull riding was the only thing he was good at and Archer said the one person he was hurting was himself. Dr. Archer branched out to try dating again. He was having a baby with Dr. Asher and he was attempting to date Dr. Kingston.
Only the two women butted heads on a recent case. Lyra was technically Dr. Asher’s patient, but she had cancer some years ago and it was Dr. Kingston who agreed to let her freeze her embryos back then. It was considered risky for women to give up eggs while undergoing cancer treatment.
The increased hormones alone make the cancer unmanageable. Dr. Kingston was the one person to get onboard with Lyra’s plan. It made Lyra trusts her absolutely. She needed surgery again because something wrong with her baby. And she asked Dr. Kingston to be there.
Kingston watched from the observation room. Then she tried to backseat drive. It didn’t end well because she got kicked out of the room and she later apologized because the surgery was a success. It was in a field she didn’t know about. She crossed a line so she apologized. She then grabbed drinks with both Asher and Archer.
It ended with Asher leaving early once the other two started to make out. It was very much awkward. Back at the hospital, Suzie didn’t make it. Lenox told Charles and he broke the news to Howie.
Lenox and Ripley would later run into each other at the bar. They agreed to not try and stop whatever they had going. They were just going to let it play out.
Ripley poured out Sully’s ashes at the Cubs Stadium with Lin. They got caught and didn’t get into any trouble. So, he was in a good mood. Good enough to take a risk on Lenox and she didn’t push him away because Suzie showed her how important risks could be.
THE END!
