In tonight’s Law & Order SVU episode, victims of sexual assault often aren’t believed. They could do everything right. They could do the rape kit, file a police report, and even be deemed Virgin Mary come again. It still might not be enough in certain cases. Like if the perp hired a great defense attorney.
The lawyers do most of the job and not always the evidence. It was one of the drawbacks to the justice system. There was a woman who told her fanbase on twitch that she had been sexually assaulted and some decided to avenge her.
They tracked down the man that allegedly assaulted her. They messed with him on social media. They contacted him through his work email. They also went after him personally.
They tracked down Zac Panessa. They destroyed his car. They spray-painted it with the word “Rapist”. They put a bunch of fliers on his car also calling him a rapist.
He came out when he saw two people vandalizing his car and he went outside to chase them off. They ended up attacking him with a bat. The police quickly arrived on the scene. They arrested the attackers. They were both so chronically online that they kept saying they were righting wrongs. They never met the rape victim. Nor did she ever name her attacker.
Her fans simply assumed it was Zac because he dated the live streamer. He was a live streamer himself. It ended badly. They unfollowed each other on social media and people just assumed he was the rapist. They were in fact wrong. SVU got called in to investigate if a crime had occurred.
They tracked down the victim. Her name is April. She said she was going through a clinical trial when she recovered a memory. She remembered she had been sexually assaulted. She didn’t remember everything about the event. Or what her attacker looked like.
SVU still had to investigate. April was taking psychedelics to deal with PTSD. The clinical trial was going well and April was considered one of the success stories. Her main therapist didn’t believe she was sexually assaulted. Only the second therapist did.
There’s usually two therapists in there with the patients because the medication could make the patients feel a little happy go lucky. Sex abuse was rife in psychedelics. One therapist said the other was dismissive because April had taken medication like that before.
April took a lot of psychedelics five years ago. She was often using and meeting with strange men. Her memory wasn’t clear because there’s a lot of gaps in that said memory. She couldn’t recall much five years ago. The same goes for people who aren’t medicated.
Five years is a long time and so Benson spoke with April again. She wanted to know what triggered the memory. April said she didn’t recall anything at first until she suddenly felt wrong. She remembered coming alert with the memory of being violated.
The memory was so fresh. She could recall being choked and her throat still hurt. It was as if she was freshly assaulted. She came to with the therapist rubbing her back and her legs. Reassuring her that it was all a hallucination. Benson then realized something was off.
Benson heard from Rollins that there was a lot of sex abuse in this field, but the two therapist solution was supposed to cut down on it. It could only happen if both were in on the crime. The therapists were Dr. Jonah Catmull and Dr. Justin Severson.
Severson seemed the empathetic one while Catmull appeared to be in the field for money. These sessions are recorded. They got April’s permission to access the video.
The pharmaceutical company behind the clinical trial didn’t care about that. They did everything to refuse to hand over the videos and that’s because this big money business didn’t want to be stopped. Catmull had a previous research partner. He said that Catmull was cold-blooded. He thought he used some of the meds from the study.
The former research partner was now working out of a bike shop. In his interview with police, he warned them that Catmull was without empathy and they saw that for themselves. They accused him of attacking April. He finally admitted he kept a copy of all the recorded sessions.
He knew what Severson was doing. He hid it so that it didn’t affect the company. Said company also knew. They buried it so that they could keep going with their research. There were plenty of people that failed April as well as the other victims.
SVU found two other victims in the same clinical trial. Severson would send Catmull out of the room when the patient was young and pretty. Its why Catmull kept the tapes. He wanted to prove it wasn’t him assaulting those women. He just didn’t care enough to stop it. SVU later arrested Severson.
He claimed it was all a part of the therapy. He was that smug and for some reason he still pled guilty. He got fifteen years for assaulting three women. Benson had interrogated him after his arrest and she knew that someone that smug wouldn’t take a deal without external pressure.
The question was who applied it. Benson believed it was Serolyte Pharmaceuticals. The multi-billion dollar company buried what happened and they still want to bury it to keep on with the research. They haven’t learned a single thing. So, ADA Carisi took them to court.
They needed to face liability or they would keep failing their patients. The judge ultimately ruled that they could ditch the CEO and keep carrying on because it was just Severson. One bad apple shouldn’t ruin groundbreaking research according to the judge.
The case got thrown out after the CEO of Serolyte was fired.
It affected Carisi who once had a big company nearly destroy his own mother. Benson was there like always. She helped Carisi see the win. Yet, Griff was tasked with looking into Benson’s old cases. Tynan wanted him to find dirt and he instead used that opportunity to dig up information on Tynan. And on his dad.
THE END!
