Two young men broke into the courthouse. They broke in. They downloaded something. They then waited to be found. It was the oddest thing and somehow it all made sense when they gave their explanation. They were hired by the county to test out the security. They also tested out police response time. Its why the sheriff’s office didn’t know about it beforehand. The County confirmed the whole thing and so the guys were let go. There were some that angry. Like Russell Kavner the security guard who got fired for falling asleep on the job.
Besides him, there were also judges as well clerks all angry about this “test”. They especially hated that everything off their servers had been downloaded and will be shared with the County for review. There was unfortunately one person with something to hide because they hunted down the men with the USB. They killed Theo. They ran over him twice to make sure he was dead. They even smashed up his phone. They rifled through his pockets. It was clear they were after something and it wasn’t a robbery or else they would’ve taken his expensive watch.
Cass thought it had to be the fired security guard. He punched her car while the security experts were in the back. It left her shaken because it reminded her of the siege. She was cleared to return to work but she wasn’t as fine as she pretended to be with Mickey. Mickey still let her work. It was important to have many trustworthy hands with this murder case. Theo was killed. His partner was still alive and someone ransacked their motel room. Reid checked. The USB from the test was gone. They asked him what was on it.
It wasn’t the first time that Theo and Reid ran this kind of test. He said they’d be surprised by how many people use their work computers for personal use. Sometimes they even leave their affair photos on there thinking it would be safe from their spouses. They’ve ran into trouble before with someone getting angry about photos. They thought they would be safe because they didn’t live where they worked. They both came from out of town for this job. Reid didn’t know how they were found at the motel because its not like they told anyone they were staying there.
They didn’t know anyone in Edgewater. Sure, Theo flirted with Cass for a bit. He could also tell that she wasn’t alright and the same goes for Mickey. Mickey could tell that Cass needed some more rest. She just couldn’t get her to accept it. They did check out her lead. They talked to Russell. Russell fell asleep on the job because he was a heavy drug user. He agreed to go to rehab as long as he didn’t get killed. Russell knew about what happened to Theo. It wasn’t him. He said that he mentioned was asked about the security specialists by Judge Merry MacRae.
The judge had a stellar reputation in town. This reputation was an actual lie. Travis was a lawyer and he said she was vindicative and cruel. He mentioned he had a twelve year old client that got sent to a juvenile facility near the county border. It was just far away to make it impossible for family to visit. The kid spraypainted a sign and stole gum. He got seventeen days inside a cell for it. Travis had nothing good to say about Judge MacRae. Cass came to see his point of view when she found out the judge sent all juvenile defenders there.
The same goes for her sister Zoey. Judge MacRae sentenced herself to that same place. Zoey came back different after that place and she began acting out at home as well as in school. Cass checked it out. It’s called Downey Correctional Youth Facility. It was a for profit place. Meaning they get paid for being at capacity and Judge MacRae always made sure they were at capacity. She was over-sentencing kids. She also supposedly ran a charity called MacRae Children Fund. It was her bailiff that took off in a blue car and came back in a red one.
The red car that was loaned to her charity. The signs were all pointing towards the judge. They merely didn’t have enough evidence to get a warrant. No judge would sign off on a loose case against one of their own. They needed more. Theo’s friend and partner was the one who came through for him. He broke into the charity’s parking lot. He found the car used to kill his friend. The one question Mickey had was how did he know about it? She had to stop Cass from earlier confronting the judge and now evidence easily fell into their lap. It was too much of a coincidence.
Mickey finally benched Cass because of it. She put her on desk duty. She didn’t suspend her because Cass was struggling to go to sleep at night. Her job was the only thing stopping her from thinking about the siege. There was a ceremony for the heroes of the siege on the Sheriff’s Office. Boone’s wife didn’t know most of the details before. She hadn’t wanted to talk about it nor did she want to watch any coverage on the news. She saw the photos. She heard the testimonials from Mickey. She doesn’t know if she could stay married to a deputy after what happened. She asked him why he didn’t retire. He said he loved his job too much to do that.
Also, whatever Mickey had with Travis was over again because he was now representing Enoch Barlow against the federal government.
And Cass got a phone call from someone who said they were with her sister the night she disappeared.
The End
