In tonight’s The Voice episode, the Knockouts kicked off tonight’s all new episode. They even added another original judge for this season. They brought back legendary CeeLo Green. He was acting as the Mega Mentor for Team Adam and Team John. Only Kelly had her own Mega Mentor. She got Michael Bublé. He was a former judge himself and was exactly what Kelly needed. The mentors were a lot of fun this season. The two men maintained that atmosphere tonight. First up was Team John. John set Marcus and Lucas for that knockout.
Both artists chose a classic. Marcus chose “Let’s Get It On”. Lucas chose “New York State Of Mind”. CeeLo the first rule of this business was to have no shame. Marcus needed to hear that especially because he had to sound like he was begging with the song he chose. He chose Marvin Gaye because it reminded him of where he came from. He was a Harlem boy and proud of it. Lucas chose his song because he was missing home. He was another New Yorker. He lived Upstate. He missed his family, his friends, and surprisingly school too.
Lucas took a gap year for school so that he could pursue music. He left him feeling without purpose, but he managed to find one tonight when he performed his song. The same goes for Marcus. Marcus’s voice can do anything. It can go anywhere. It just couldn’t beat Lucas tonight. Lucas won that Knockout. Next up was Team Kelly. Kelly paired her country boys together. Houston and JW were best buds and so they were really disheartened to learn they were competing directly against each other.
Houston was in school. He was getting a degree because he happily admits its his backup plan. He wanted to be a husband and father one day. Until his career took off, he needed way to provide. He chose “Love You Anyway” because of the way the song spoke to him. JW wasn’t in school. He was working. He was a triple chair turn. He chose the song “If It Hadn’t Been For Love”. He rehearsed the song in a monotone way and both Kelly and Michael said that he needed a sense of urgency. He wasn’t just putting a show. He needed to compete.
Whether either of them liked it or not.
The Knockouts was the most time that Kelly got to spend with her team. She hyped them up when they needed it and was critical when necessary. She wanted them both to give a stellar performance and they did. Those country boys were great. The only issue Kelly had was picking a winner. She didn’t have a Steal or a Save. She had to lose one of them forever from her team. In the end, she chose to keep JW. Kelly felt he was just a little bit more ready for the competition right now. She still shared kind words with Houston after his elimination.
Next up was Team Adam. He paired Alexia and Bay for his first Knockout of the night. Alexia was up first. She chose Whitney Houston. She used to perform her all the time as a kid. Her mom used to put her in talent shows all the time and a treat for winning was a burger. Alexia was more excited about the burger than she was about winning. Now, she was singing “You Give Good Love” on a tv show. It was a full circle moment for her. Bay was different. His mom wasn’t pushing the musical journey. He was pushing himself.
Bay moved to Nashville without a plan. He was broke in six months. He kept preserving. He would go on to gain songwriting credit on one song and now he wanted to be known as a performer as well. He chose the song “One Headlight”. He was a rocker at heart. Adam got that from him instantly. He loved Bay. Bay just didn’t beat Alexia tonight. Alexia did justice to Whitney and that a certified winner right there. She won this Knockout. Next up was Team Kelly. She paired Liv and Abigayle to knock out each other.
Abigayle chose to be brave. She chose to cover “Feather”. Which was new and somewhat breathlessly complicated. Liv also chose a difficult song. She just chose to cover one of Kelly’s songs. Yes, Kelly was her coach only covering her song in front of her had to be the toughest possible thing. She chose the song “Breakaway”. It was a very touching song because it moves everyone who hears it. Liv’s version wasn’t as great as say the original. Abigayle’s version was good. It simply lacked a sense of urgency.
The other judges were no help with this one. They didn’t help Kelly pick one. Kelly struggled with that one the most because she didn’t want to say Liv after Liv chose her song and she had to go with her. Liv’s performance at least took a spin on the original. Next Up was Team John. John paired Natasha and Syd. They were stylistically different. Yet were strong in their own lanes. Syd was a powerhouse. She chose the song “Tell Me You Love Me” because her college experience wasn’t the best.
She let haters bring her down. She now sings that song because she told herself in the mirror everyday “tell me you love me”. She used her voice to become a storyteller and she blew everyone away. Both in rehearsals as well as the live show. Syd’s voice was undeniable. Natasha was probably kicking herself for choosing “Another Sad Love Song”. It was a great song. Practically a classic at this point in time. It just couldn’t knock out what Syd did. Natasha was great only her song was laid back. It didn’t quite hit the same high note as Syd did with hers.
The winner was clear from the start. The only thing Syd lacked was that she didn’t tap into emotion enough. Something she can work on for the next time. Syd still won that Knockout easily. The last Knockout of the night went to Team Adam. Adam paired Mike with Jeremy. He stole Mike from Team John. Mike chose the song “How You Gonna Act Like That” and he has the voice to back it up. He merely lacks the confidence to truly bring it to justice. Or so CeeLo felt. It was different with Jeremy in the sense that his voice didn’t sound as strong during rehearsals.
Jeremy chose the song “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”. He needed fine-tuning. His coach and their mentor helped him get there. He was able to add a higher level of emotion that Mike’s song lacked. According to Adam, the decision was close. The other judges felt the same way. They didn’t know how Adam was going to vote. Adam ultimately made his decision to name Jeremy as the winner based on his potential. He hasn’t reached the fullness of it. Adam felt that if he does he’ll be an unstoppable force.
THE END!
