There’s a storm in the city. The whole place was given a warning that it might turn into a tornado. Watson was loving it and overworked nurses like Shinwell was being pushed to his limits. He was a trainee still. It meant that he was overworked as well as underpaid. Shinwell was quick on his feet. He did his best to keep up and he quickly noticed a trend. He noticed that everyone that had a cut had it turn black on them. It was also oozing puss. He tried to bring this to a supervisor when he noticed the trend. She told him that she didn’t have time for theories. And so Shinwell went above her.
Shinwell went to Watson. He showed him pictures of two of the injuries. There were three patients only one patient had a cut on her thigh. She cut herself shaving. Watson and his team took one look at the photos and they quickly shut down the hospital because there was a chance it was flesh-eating bacteria outbreak at UHOP. They tested everyone. They first had to start with Shinwell because he treated three patients. There was soon a fourth patient. Then Watson checked at other hospitals. They had patients with the same thing.
They were all in one area. This was a fungal infection. The tornado released certain spores into the area and that’s how they all got sick. One patient had already died from this. Another was going to lose his leg. Ben was sixteen and he had basketball scholarships to five places. It hurt him when he was told he was going to lose his leg. He had bonded with Shinwell and Shinwell was there to support him during surgery. Shinwell was also taking it hard. They found out what could help these patients. It just wasn’t going to be enough to save Ben’s leg.
Shinwell was having a moment of crisis afterwards. He asked Watson how did he do it? How did he kept going because there was a part of Shinwell that felt he could have saved that leg if he had come forward earlier. Ben was the first one he saw with the injury. He knew something wasn’t right about it. He ignored that feeling until he came across two others with the same thing. He felt he wasted time looking for answers when he should have gone straight to Watson to begin with. This case was going to haunt Shinwell for a bit.
Frankie was another patient. She’s the one that had a cut to her thigh. Her husband was out of town and so she asked for a deacon at the church be her medical sponsor. Everyone figured out the deacon and her were having an affair. Frankie was doing the worst out of all the patients because she was in contact with animal spores. Her lover had pet guinea pigs. It was making Frankie sicker. Her sexually transmitted flesh-eating fungus was made worse by flea bites. And so Watson had to warn the couple that the truth might get out if they both start taking the same medication.
The affair partner said it was no big deal. The husband knew about the relationship. They were all in a throuple. It was complicated and somewhat messy. It also gave them answers that were making Frankie sick. She got treatment. She was going to live thanks to this awkward situation to explain to anyone else. They also had to keep it from the church or it might cause a scandal. Adam also got some news. He wasn’t sure if he should be happy or not about it. His fiancé was pregnant. They had discussed kids before.
They initially were going to wait a few years before they started trying. Now, that’s no longer a problem. They were pregnant and Adam was just beginning to realize he might not want kids. He liked kids in an abstract way. He just couldn’t handle them in a very real way. Or be a parent to one. Adam was freaking and so the only person he told was his twin. He told him all his fears. He even brought up that he thought he was a horrible person. Stephens assured him that he wasn’t a bad guy. He was merely overwhelmed and needed time to think about all the changes coming.
The same goes for Watson. All episode long Watson has been happy about the storm outside. He loved the fact that it was turning into a tornado and he didn’t tell anyone why he loved it. it turns out it reminded him of a happier time with Mary. They were once on that same roof twenty years ago dancing to that one song that Watson always plays during a storm and they kissed. They kept kissing because they were happily in love back then. And fast-forward twenty years, and Mary figured out why Watson still loves those storms.
It reminded him of their marriage.
The patients all got proper treatment and they were going to live, but Adam was sitting on the pregnancy until they passed the twelve week mark and Watson realized his fresh start with Laila might not be wanted he needs right now.
THE END
