There’s a new Plastic Surgery Attending. Her name is Dr. Toni Wright. She didn’t recognize Amelia when they first met and that was funny because they went to med school together. They were even in the same study group. Amelia remembered it. Toni doesn’t seem to. Toni apparently hated Amelia back then so it’s surprising that she doesn’t remember any of it. Amelia kept dropping hints all day. They shared the same patient. There was a woman injured in a nasty car accident and Toni was needed to reconstruct her face while Amelia was needed to deal with the brain damage.
Toni was brought in after wining the excellence in teaching award. Except she wasn’t teaching Ben. Ben and Kwon were on her service. They were typical residents in that they had plenty of questions. They wanted to learn from someone they heard was one of the best. She just wasn’t interested in engaging with them. This could be her teaching method and the residents will realize later on. Or she hates them. It was hard to tell with her. They had to learn her language as they with every surgeon.
Speaking of which, Teddy had a tough patient. His name is Corban. He’s been sick since he was baby. He’s had several grafts to his heart and they keep failing. Teddy’s plan was just to do another. Corban was fine with that right up to heard the podcasts about her groundbreaking surgery. The patient in that case had a similar situation as his. Corban wanted to do the surgery because he thought he was a magical fix. He doesn’t know that the original patient got it less than six months ago. It might still fail her.
Corban also didn’t know that he has more scarring than Nora did. Teddy didn’t think he was the right candidate for this new procedure. Rather than explain all that to him, she tried to say that his case was different and that he needed to take the safer option. Corban then asked to speak with the other surgeon from the podcast. Winston came in to talk to him. He explained the surgery. They were going over the details of it when they got caught by Teddy. Teddy couldn’t believe her colleague would talk to her patient behind her back.
Teddy and Winston got into a huge argument about it. Teddy was also upset with Simone. She figured out who told Corban about the groundbreaking surgery. Simone was so worried about being hated that she tried to focus on other things. Like how she wanted to freeze her eggs. She wanted to become a mom one day and she didn’t know when. She knew that freezing her eggs would ensure that she could be a mom whenever she chooses. She tried to talk Jules into doing it with her and Jules turned it down. She has no interest in getting “whacked” out on hormone injections.
Jules wasn’t sure she wanted to be a parent. She had to parent her parents and her brother. She now wanted a break from it. Though she wasn’t as desperate as her patient. Jules’s patient was a urologist who gave himself a vasectomy. His wife thought they were trying for a baby. She didn’t know that her husband would go behind her back to get a vasectomy or that he would try to do it on himself. She yelled at him a good while because now he needed surgery. His vasectomy went wrong. Catherine had to fix it herself.
Catherine knew the urologist. They were friends. She’d understood why he didn’t want more children. He was a grandfather already. Now, was the time to enjoy being a grandparent without all the duties of parenthood. Catherine stepped up as a mentor for Jules. She said of all her accomplishments, she wouldn’t change being a mother because that was still the most rewarding role. It made Jules reconsider her options. She also talked to Kimmy the wife and she couldn’t get a dog because she was allergic. She has nowhere to put that maternal urge now because of her husband.
Jules figured never say never so she agreed to freeze her eggs with Simone.
Lucas meanwhile got into some trouble. He didn’t teach a first year like he was supposed to. He instead focused on Katie’s illness and focusing on one patient made him forget about the rest. So, Lucas got yelled at twice. First by Bailey and then by Spencer the first year. Bailey hated her day. Ben didn’t have a good one either. He learned why Toni didn’t like him. She said he was so focused on anticipating her needs over the patient that she didn’t think he had a future in Plastic Surgery. Toni also cleared the air with Amelia.
Toni had a crush on her in college. She tried to kiss her and missed. She was so embarrassed that she avoided her ever since. It turns out Amelia had a crush on her too. She just didn’t know about the kiss. She thought Toni had been drunk and stumbled into her. Well, the two ladies thought to make up for what they missed at med school. They began sleeping with each other on tonight’s episode.
And Corban chose the easier surgery once everything was explained, but he still took a turn for the worst. He might need the brand new one that Teddy was still hesitating to give him.
