In tonight’s Law & Order SVU episode, Detective Amanda Rollins was so used to hopping around to different jobs that SVU felt permanent. She was glad to have a place where she belonged. She even had a captain that reminded her of her date night with her husband. Rollins was late, but Carisi didn’t mind.
He waited a long time for her. He knew a few minutes wouldn’t kill him. The kids were with his mother. They enjoyed dinner at a fancy restaurant and they had just returned home when Rollins noticed signs of a break-in. The guy had pulled a knife on Carisi before she could warn him. And so Carisi fought back.
Typically, cops asked people not to fight back. He did in this case because he’s been trained. He was former NYPD. He also recently survived a hostage situation and wasn’t too keen about suffering another one.
He got slashed by the knife the assailant had. Rollins shot the assailant. She got him in the shoulder and it didn’t slow him down. He ran out of there. The couple quickly realized this was a targeted attack. The perp broke in and waited for them to come home. He wanted to hurt them both. They were both involved in the justice system and this could be revenge.
Rollins also discharging her gun meant she was benched. She was on light duty until she talked to a therapist. She needed to be cleared through a psych eval before she can return to work.
Or that’s what its supposed to be. Rollins didn’t like being benched. She was itching to be involved in the case. She compiled a list of enemies. Hers and her husband’s. She listened to voice recording of their suspects. None of them founded like the guy. Rollins remembered his voice rather clearly. She was worried about how well-organized the attack was.
Their would-be killer knew by the name. He knew the perfect spot to break into the apartment. He also had a getaway driver ready outside with a car. This wasn’t a one-off. It couldn’t be.
Their attacker has hurt other people and SVU found a previous victim. The attacker left blood at another crime scene in Brooklyn. He attacked Diana Vitale. She was a court reporter. She often works with Carisi. She was badly injured. She would later pass away from said injuries so she couldn’t help them with getting information.
Captain Benson spoke with Chief Tynan. Tynan was letting SVU handled the case. She also was willing to be the bad guy if Rollins didn’t like the therapist. Only Benson took the bullet on that one.
She personally arranged for Rolllins to speak with Huang. He was former FBI. He was a profiler that often helped SVU back in the day. He’s since retired and he helps out every once in a while by filing for the therapist appointments. He helped Rollins focus. She found another victim. This other victim had no connection to the justice system, but she was raised by Judge Anita Wright.
The judge retired to Florida years ago. There were only five cases in which ever intended target worked. Rollins knew instantly which of the five was responsible. It was Henry Mesner.
She arrested him back in the 2013 for abusing his sister. He was released from juvenile detention in 2021. He then killed his family. Rollins saved his sister from him and he attacked Carisi in court during his arraignment. He’s five years into a sixty year sentence. Henry couldn’t be their killer. Rollins suspects he was merely pulling the strings.
She might’ve been right because someone with a gunshot wound showed up at an urgent care. He claimed that he got hit by a nail gun. The nurse knew that was a lie so she called it in.
He left before the cops showed up. She saw the license plate and they traced it back to Ruby Mesner. The one that Henry kept trying to kill. It simply didn’t make sense. Why would Ruby help the person that always hurt her? Ruby entered the foster care system after her parents were killed by her brother and she was fine for a while.
Everyone thought she’d make it. Ruby slowly began to develop issues. She would cut class. She would harm herself and then she got involved in drugs. She got kicked out after her first arrest.
She was shacked up with her boyfriend. The boyfriend was Phillip Wingate. He was apparently Henry’s biggest fan. Ruby visited Henry in prison and she tried to attack him. Ruby was pretty messed up. She was so used to be abused that now she lets Phillip do it. Phillip was obsessed with Henry’s story. He heard it from a podcast or documentary and he went out of his way to target Ruby.
Ruby was a full-blown addict by then. Phillip was kind to her at first. He gave her a place to stay. He didn’t ask for anything in return. He even helped her get drugs and then he began to control her.
He used the drugs to string her out so that she didn’t know where she was or what she was doing. Or that she was helping him “avenge” Henry’s case. They found out about Phillip from the foster parents. They held onto Ruby’s phone number when she called asking for money. The call led back to Phillip’s home. They found Ruby there. Phillip was still missing.
They found Phillip’s manifesto. He wrote down the names of all the victims over and over again. He also included what might’ve been his attempts at poetry. It came across as gibberish.
He also wrote Henry. Henry never read them. He doesn’t read his fan mail. If he had, he would’ve known that Phillip was going to target Huang next. Rollins read the letter. They saved the doctor and Phillip tried to escape on foot. Rollins cornered him. She told him that Henry never read any of his letters. He had no clue who he was.
It made Phillip so mad that he tried to attack her and Benson killed him. Rollins had an outburst earlier. Benson benched her, but in the end Benson forgave. She said that could never happen again and so Rollins knows not to unleash on a concerned friend.
THE END!
